Perimenopause: What’s Happening and How to Take Charge

Hey there, lovely. If you're reading this, chances are you're starting to feel a shift in your body, maybe even in your mind and spirit. You're not alone. Perimenopause isn’t just a phase that gets brushed off with a shrug—it’s a journey that can last anywhere from 8 to 12 years, filled with unexpected twists and turns that few people truly understand.

I’m here to walk you through what’s happening inside your body because you deserve to know every detail. More importantly, you deserve to know how to take control of it.

Stage 1: The Early Wake-Up Call

The first sign that you’re entering perimenopause can feel like a gentle nudge or a wake-up call you weren’t prepared for. Your hormones, estrogen and progesterone, begin to fluctuate, causing your once-predictable periods to start acting up. This is where you might notice that things aren’t as they used to be.

Brain fog sets in—you walk into a room and suddenly forget why you’re there. It’s disorienting and frustrating, I know. PMS symptoms start to amplify; mood swings become unpredictable, and your sex drive may feel like it's taken a back seat.

But here’s something important: if you’ve been taking care of your health—nurturing your body, mind, and soul—these symptoms might not feel as overwhelming. Think of this stage as your body’s way of saying, “Hey, it’s time to tune in and take care.”

Stage 2: The Classic Chaos

Then comes what I call the classic chaos stage. This is where things start to get a little more intense. Hot flashes, night sweats, waking up drenched in the middle of the night—it’s like your body has its own internal thermostat, and it's all over the place. You might also notice weight gain around your belly, even if your diet and exercise routine haven’t changed. This isn’t your fault; it's your body's response to fluctuating hormones.

Your cycles might become shorter or longer, and you may experience vaginal dryness, making intimacy a bit more challenging. It’s okay to feel frustrated. You’re not imagining it, and you’re definitely not alone.

This is also the stage where brain fog can become a more constant companion, and you might experience anovulation—cycles where you bleed but don’t actually ovulate. This can be a confusing time, and it might feel like your body is working against you.

Stage 3: The Late-Stage Struggle

By this stage, perimenopause is no longer subtle. Your periods become irregular, sometimes skipping altogether. Those early symptoms? They’ve doubled down. Memory lapses might make you feel like you're losing track of things, and joint pain might feel like it’s aging you before your time. Then there’s the inflammation—it's like it just shows up out of nowhere, along with changes to your skin and hair that might make you feel less like yourself.

One of the biggest challenges here is insulin resistance, which can make weight loss feel like an uphill battle. For some, this is when diabetes can become a real concern. It’s tough, but knowledge is power. Understanding these changes means you’re one step closer to taking control.

Stage 4: The Menopause Milestone

Finally, you reach menopause—12 months without a period. It might seem like a relief at first, but it's important to remember that your body still needs support. Postmenopause isn’t the end of the road; it’s just the beginning of a new chapter. If you’ve been proactive in taking care of yourself, this can be a time of renewal—a chance to step into your power with more energy, focus, and drive than ever before.

No more periods, no more hormonal rollercoasters. But the journey doesn’t stop here. Your body has unique needs, and continuing to support it can help you thrive in this new stage of life.
